Currently several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands, Invest 96 is struggling to organize. Lack of consistent convection is inhibiting development at the moment, but favorable conditions should allow the disturbance to reach tropical depression status by tomorrow or Saturday. The system will bring heavy rains to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tonight and tomorrow. Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, southeast Bahamas, Jamaica, Cuba and perhaps even the Cayman Islands will all get a decent dose of precipitation over the weekend from 96 as well.
Forecast models are speculating that a trough of low pressure off the east coast will turn 96 eastward out to sea early next week, steering clear of U.S. coastal areas- similar to the path of Tropical Storm Bertha at the beginning of August. BUT accuracy of long range models for systems that have not reached depression status are not always reliable.
