On April 4th the Tropical Meteorology Project team from Colorado State University announced their anticipated 2019 Atlantic hurricane season predictions. The upcoming season is forecast to have slightly below-average activity.
The forecast predictions point to:
- 13 named storms
- 5 hurricanes
- 2 major hurricanes
According to the NOAA Hurricane Research Division statistics, the U.S. averages one to two hurricane landfalls each season. As all coastal populations are aware, it only takes one hurricane to create a memorable storm season.
The various possibilities for at least one major (category 3 or greater) hurricane landfall in the U.S. are:
- 48% for the entire U.S. coastline
- 30% for the U.S. East Coast including the Florida Peninsula
- 28% for the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville
Although a slightly below-average season is projected at this point, there are still many variables that can affect the upcoming hurricane season.
